If this guitar holds up like I think it will, it'll be mine for a very, very long time. For the most part you can make bolt-on neck kits work even if they're not that great, you may need to spend more time and effort getting the neck in good shape as you would with somewhere more expensive, but drilling bridge holes is not a trivial thing and can ruin the build completely. It does not hurt the pickup and can be bent back if needed. Bending the legs worked great and is easy if you go slow. The PHRED instruments DockStar Koa gets its inspiration from Trey Anastasio's Languedoc guitar. Had the issue with a Phred Dockstar when I bought it. Works like a charm and requires no foam, shimming or surgical tubing. The price seems to fit all things considered, but I'm interested in hearing what others think about the guitar based on the link. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend the legs of the pickups. This is the Phred Dockstar - a fully hollow shred machine with upgraded Seymour Duncans and a 24 fret neck. Obviously, I'd much rather play the guitar prior to buying, but that's not an option here. However, at $5500-$6500-ish, these things aren't cheap. Aside from being made in the US, the R2 looks to answer all of these critiques about the Dockstar and Reprise models: the hardware and wiring is great, comes with quality pickups, and optional Schaller M6 locking tuners (+$20 upgrade). The neck is Maple with an Ebony fretboard, scale length is 25.5 with 24 medium jumbo frets. The top & back are Koa or Flame Maple veneer and have traditional style bound F-holes.
#PHRED DOCKSTAR UPGRADE#
One thing I've heard consistently about Phred guitars is that the lower-tier models are actually pretty darn good for what you pay, but sometimes they would really benefit from an upgrade here or there. The PHRED DockStar has a lightweight hollow-body made of Mahogany. The R2 is their premium line modeled after the famed Languedoc of Phish fame. Right now I'm thinking about buying an R2 Koa. Hey folks, there really aren't any threads dedicated to Phred Instruments, aside from the occasional one about a specific model, but I'm hoping we could use a more general one to talk about our experiences and share any feedback.
